Pride and housing for LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers
Pride is our time to come together to celebrate our clients, colleagues and supporters in the LGBTQIA+ community and the strides made since Stonewall.
It is also a moment to highlight the ongoing need and work to achieve safe housing and equity for all LGBTQIA+ individuals and families.
As The Williams Institute research shows, LGBTQIA+ Americans, particularly trans individuals, continue to be at greater risk of experiencing poverty and homelessness.
- Trans adults are five times, and all LGBTQIA+ adults are almost three times, more likely than their cisgender heterosexual counterparts to experience homelessness: 30%, 17% and 6% respectively.
- Among sexual minorities who experience homelessness, the majority (71%) experience it as an adult (age 18 years or older)
- Amid the pandemic, LGBTQIA+ adults (ages 45+) were twice as likely as their heterosexual counterparts to be laid off (11% vs. 6%) and have problems paying their rent/mortgages (15% vs. 8%).
- 29% of trans adults and bisexual women and 22% of all LGBTQIA+ adults live in poverty in contrast to 16% of their cisgender heterosexual counterparts
At The Partnership, we believe everyone has a human right to safe, affordable housing and, thanks to you, we work with New Yorkers in all communities to provide the rental assistance and supportive services that prevent homelessness.
Thank you for partnering with us to celebrate Pride 2021and to keep all New Yorkers safely housed.
