Partner For Education Fund

Prevention.
Intervention.
Support.

Our supporters understand that preventing a crisis is more valuable than responding to the consequences of that crisis. Keeping families in their homes and in stable housing while also keeping children close to their schools is critical to our vision of solving homelessness by preventing it.

The Partner for Education Fund has been created to make this vision possible. Your partnership will allow New York City families at risk of homelessness to find and maintain stable housing, keep their children in the schools they love, and contribute in their communities. Together, we can begin to build a city where no one is without a home and all children are given an equal chance at lifelong success.

Children who experience homelessness are at increased risk for future poverty and homelessness because they are often moved around from shelter to shelter, with more than half missing an average of one month of school in the year. In 2015-16 school year, only one-fifth of children who experienced homelessness showed proficiency in Math (19%) and English Language Arts (21%), in contrast to two-thirds of their non-low-income housed counterparts. The impact of homelessness on children’s school performance continues, even after their families regain housing: children who formerly lived in shelters showed low proficiency in Math (21%) and ELA (24%) tests. These children need extra support to catch up and stay on track academically.

The Fund aims to implement permanent solutions to homelessness, not just stopgaps for today. It will secure children’s well-being and prevent them from being homeless today, and in the future, by:

  • Helping families to avoid eviction through financial assistance and mediation
  • Advocating directly for parents to be placed in shelters in their home communities, near their children’s schools
  • Connecting children to volunteer tutors to help them catch up in school
  • Giving families access to housing placement services to move them out of shelter and into new homes

Partner with us in our commitment to building a just and equitable society and creating lasting community change through solution-oriented programs and policy initiatives that will eliminate the root causes of homelessness.
