Out of Shelter
Eight-year-old Tiger, his brother and his mother had been in a city shelter for almost a year, a typical stay for most homeless families.
Tiger’s mom came to the Family Resource Center in East New York, Brooklyn, hoping to find help as she navigated her way through the daunting and depressing city shelter system. As we helped, Tiger and his brother enjoyed after-school activities, like this art project where he imagined what it would be like to celebrate Christmas in a real home.
Thanks to the Partnership’s team of family advocates at FRC, Tiger and his family now have their own apartment — and a place for celebrating Christmas, birthdays and other special occasions.
But help from the Partnership doesn’t end there. Our family advocates continued to work with Tiger’s mom, making sure that she had the support to succeed long-term. She’s gone back to school while working part-time, and Tiger and his brother have a safe and secure home.
